What Python is used for here
In this market Python appears in three distinct places: backend services, data work, and automation inside companies whose main product is not software. The interview differs sharply between them, so find out which one you are in before you prepare.
Django and FastAPI are both common for services. For data roles, pandas fluency matters more than framework knowledge.
Language questions that actually get asked
These recur, and they are cheap to prepare properly.
- Mutable default arguments — why the empty list bites

Why does this function keep returning the list from the previous call?
Concurrency, and the GIL question
Almost guaranteed to come up. The weak answer is "the GIL means Python cannot do threads". The strong answer distinguishes what the GIL does and does not stop.
Threads are still the right tool for I/O-bound work — waiting on a network call releases the lock. CPU-bound work needs processes. Async is a third thing again, and it is not faster, it is better at waiting.

The standard library people actually reach for
- collections — defaultdict, Counter, deque
- itertools for the loop you were about to write by hand
- dataclasses, and when a plain dict is honestly fine
- pathlib over os.path
- logging configured once, rather than print statements you forget to remove
What interviewers here are really assessing
- Do you write Python, or Java in Python syntax
- Can you read someone else's code and say what it does
- Do you know what your dependencies cost you
- How do you test — and do you, when nobody is asking
What to focus on at your level
Junior · 0–2 years
Comfortable syntax, comprehensions, and a project with a requirements file that installs cleanly.
Mid · 2–5 years
The concurrency distinction, tests you wrote first, and one performance problem you profiled rather than guessed at.
Senior · 5+ years
Packaging and dependency judgement, a position on typing, and code you have deliberately made simpler than it could have been.

Frequently asked questions
Django or FastAPI?
Both are hired for here. Django dominates existing systems and admin-heavy products; FastAPI is common in newer services and anything API-first. Knowing one well is enough.
How important is type hinting?
Rising quickly, particularly in teams working with European clients. You do not need advanced generics — you need to annotate function signatures and mean it.
Will I be asked LeetCode-style questions?
Less often than online advice suggests. Practical tasks and code reading are far more common in this region. Ask the recruiter about format; it is a normal question.
